About Hair Treatment

Recent surveys have shown that over 85 million men and women suffer from progressive hair loss, which in time results in baldness. Androgenic (sometimes androgenetic) alopecia, is the most common form of baldness. This article will focus predominantly on male patterned baldness.Tho it should be noted that the causes of baldness in men and women is slightly different.

When male-pattern baldness begins, the hair becomes increasingly thinner and thinner until it is eventually altogether gone. The root cause of this is the human hormone known as dihydrotesttosterone otherwise called (DHT). When there is an over abundance of DHT in the scalp, it attaches itself to the hair follicles thus blocking the blood supply and interupting their growth. As time continues, the follicles, deprived of the necessary nutrients, shrink and the hair shaft width is decreased. The hair gets thinner as a result of this. When a hair shaft has become to small then no new hair may continue to grow from the follicle.

All tho there are many proposed solutions for the problem of baldness, such as a prescription drug you may have heard of called Finasteride (marketed as Propecia) which claims to scale back the level of DHT, they are not the best solutions to the problem of baldness. The prescription drugs often have serious side effects, being that they are synthetic chemicals. There are documented cases of gynecomastia as well as erectile dysfunction among users of Finasteride.

However, there are natural supplements at hand, which can fortunately block DHT just as effectively or even more so than prescription drugs. Among these natural ingredients are Saw Palmetto (an effective herbal DHT blocker), extract of pumpkin seeds and zinc (which prevents conversion of testosterone into DHT thus reducing the overall DHT concentration.) An efficient and good herbal hair loss remedy must also include nutrients to generate rapid regrowth of hair follicles damaged by DHT.
